Rain Washes Out Australia’s Hopes as Zimbabwe Reach Super Eight for First Time Since 2003

Persistent drizzle in Pallekele has ended Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign, with Zimbabwe advancing to the Super Eight stage for the first time since 2003.

Australia’s fate was sealed after Ireland and Zimbabwe were forced to share points when their scheduled clash was abandoned without a toss due to rain. The single point was enough to take Zimbabwe to five points in Group B, putting them beyond Australia’s reach with one game still to play.

Sri Lanka had already secured qualification for the Super Eight with a victory over Australia earlier in the tournament. As a result, the Group B qualifiers are now confirmed: Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will progress, while Australia bow out of contention.

Zimbabwe will move into Australia’s seeded position (X2) in the Super Eight. They are set to face West Indies in Mumbai on February 23, India in Chennai on February 26, and South Africa in Delhi on March 1. It marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe cricket, as this is their first appearance in the second round of a World Cup since 2003.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will take on England and New Zealand at home in the Super Eight stage. Their third opponent is yet to be determined.

Although eliminated from the race for the Super Eight, Australia still have one group-stage fixture remaining — a dead rubber against Oman in Pallekele on Friday. Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka are also scheduled to meet in Colombo on Thursday.

Pallekele is set to host four more matches in the coming days, but weather forecasts indicate that further rain could disrupt proceedings, adding another layer of uncertainty to the tournament schedule.
