Dube, Varun Keep India Unbeaten as Super Eight Spot Beckons
India underlined their status as T20 World Cup favourites with a commanding win over the Netherlands, stretching their unbeaten run in the tournament to 12 matches. On a sluggish back-soil surface, there was no 300 — not even 200 looked certain for long — but India’s 193 proved more than enough to seal another comprehensive victory.
Dutt’s Early Strikes Test India
After choosing to bat, India were made to work hard by Netherlands’ disciplined bowling attack. Tall offspinner Aryan Dutt set the tone, bowling flat and quick while denying room to the left-handers.
He removed Abhishek Sharma, who endured his third duck of the tournament, attempting to clear mid-on and missing completely. Dutt then accounted for Ishan Kishan, the in-form batter, with a clever dismissal that saw the ball ricochet onto the stumps.
India resisted promoting Suryakumar Yadav, allowing Dutt to tie down Tilak Varma as well. At one stage, India endured boundary-less stretches of 20, 19 and 16 deliveries, with the run rate under eight per over after 15 overs.
The Dutch seamers, particularly Kyle Klein, varied their pace cleverly, while Logan van Beek created two chances in a pivotal ninth over. A dropped catch by Michael Levitt offered Suryakumar brief respite, but Tilak fell soon after to a sharp catch by Roelof van der Merwe at wide long-off.
Dutt returned to finish with impressive figures of 4-0-19-2, keeping India’s power hitters in check for much of the innings.
Dube’s Counterattack Lifts India
Enter Shivam Dube.
Initially cautious — just six off his first 11 balls — Dube survived a close lbw decision before unleashing a brutal counterattack. Targeting Colin Ackermann and the change bowlers, Dube’s approach was refreshingly uncomplicated: no sweeps, no innovation — just powerful strikes from the crease.
He raced to 66 off 30 balls, expertly handling slower deliveries that often trouble him. Even after Suryakumar fell attempting a second pick-up six and Hardik Pandya started slowly, Dube maintained the momentum.
Pandya eventually joined the assault with three sixes as India plundered 75 runs from the final five overs to post 193 — a total that had looked unlikely earlier.
Bowlers Seal Comfortable Win
The Netherlands chase never quite gathered steam against India’s world-class attack. Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah exploited early movement, bowling unchanged for four overs and conceding just 22 while inducing 12 false shots.
With the required rate climbing past 12 an over by the ninth over, wickets fell in quick succession. Varun Chakravarthy and Pandya struck early, pushing the Netherlands further behind.
Chakravarthy nearly produced a hat-trick, dismissing Ackermann with a slog-induced catch, bowling Dutt with a wrong’un, and nearly breaching the defence of Scott Edwards.
Though Dube conceded 23 from his first nine deliveries, he recovered smartly, using wide lines to remove Bas de Leede and effectively end the contest in the 14th over.
With 100 required from the last eight overs at one stage, the Netherlands were always chasing the game. India’s all-round display — resilience with the bat and control with the ball — ensured another emphatic win and reinforced their credentials as the team to beat heading into the Super Eight stage.
