Lauren Down Retires from International Cricket at 30

Lauren Down has announced her retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on an eight-year career with New Zealand.

The 30-year-old middle-order batter last represented New Zealand in December 2024 in an ODI against Australia, while her most recent T20I appearance came in December 2022. In a statement released by New Zealand Cricket, Down reflected on her journey with the national side.

“I have loved my time being part of the White Ferns group, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have represented my country,” Down said. “I will miss being around the girls, but I'm now looking forward to watching on from the sidelines, and seeing what this group is able to achieve.”

An Auckland representative throughout her domestic career, Down made her debut in 2011 in a T20 match against Canterbury. She went on to play 202 matches for Auckland — split evenly between 101 List A and 101 T20 games. She finishes as the third-highest T20 run-scorer for Auckland with 1,496 runs and fourth on the List A charts with 2,690 runs.

Down was also part of five title-winning campaigns in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, most recently in the 2019–20 season when she struck 90 in the final to help Auckland defeat Northern Districts.

“A huge part of my cricket career has been in the Auckland set-up, and I cannot thank Auckland Cricket, my coaches and team-mates enough for the part they have played in my journey,” she said.

Down made her international debut in March 2018 in an ODI against West Indies in Lincoln. She went on to play 35 ODIs and 13 T20Is for the New Zealand women's national cricket team, scoring 486 ODI runs at an average of 16.75 and 93 T20I runs at 13.28.

White Ferns head coach Ben Sawyer paid tribute to Down’s contribution, highlighting her resilience and team-first attitude.

“Lauren has been a fantastic team person, and has always given her all in the White Ferns environment,” Sawyer said. “It's a testament to her dedication and commitment to her game that she was able to go away to welcome her first child, and then return to the level of international cricket so quickly. Lauren has been a valued member of the White Ferns, and has always demonstrated the values of our team both inside and outside the environment.”

Down had opted out of a central contract for the 2023–24 season to welcome her first child before returning to the contracted list for 2024–25. She featured on New Zealand’s 2024 tours of England and India and played her final international match in the third ODI against Australia at Basin Reserve last summer.

Her retirement marks the end of a steady and committed career with the White Ferns, both on the international stage and in domestic cricket.
