South Africa Opt to Bat in Ahmedabad as Both Sides Make Tactical Changes

South Africa captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bat first against India in what promises to be a closely fought contest on a dry black-soil surface in Ahmedabad.

The decision raised a few eyebrows but appeared to be influenced by pitch conditions. Markram noted that the surface — similar to the one used in the previous match — looked drier than typical Ahmedabad tracks. Unlike the usually tacky early conditions that assist bowlers, this pitch seemed unlikely to offer much early grip.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted he would have opted to bat as well but expressed satisfaction at getting a surface adjacent to the one used against the Netherlands. His comments hinted that the conditions could evolve as the game progresses.

South Africa Recall First-Choice Players

South Africa made four significant changes, restoring all first-choice players who had been rested in their previous fixture. Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj and David Miller returned to the XI, strengthening both their bowling depth and middle-order stability.

Kagiso Rabada retained his place ahead of Anrich Nortje, who had picked up two wickets in his only appearance so far.

The selection decisions suggest the Proteas are aiming for a balanced attack suited to dry conditions, with both pace and spin options available.

India Make Tactical Spin Switch

India, meanwhile, made a notable tactical call by leaving out vice-captain Axar Patel. The left-arm spinner, known for his ability to disrupt with both bat and ball, was replaced by Washington Sundar.

Suryakumar described the change as a “tactical” move, hinting at the possible early use of off-spin against South Africa’s left-handers, particularly Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton. The move signals India’s intent to exploit matchups, even though their pace duo and Varun Chakravarthy have historically enjoyed success against South Africa’s top order.
