Sri Lanka Could Host T20 World Cup Semi-Final in Colombo

Sri Lanka national cricket team could play a potential 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final at home in Colombo, following a clarification from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding knockout-stage logistics.

According to a communication sent to stakeholders after the Super Eight line-ups were confirmed, Semi-final 1 has been designated as a “floating” fixture that will be held either in Colombo or Kolkata, depending on which teams qualify.

Under the revised arrangements, if Pakistan national cricket team qualify for the semi-finals, they will play Semi-final 1 at the R. Premadasa Stadium on March 4. However, if Pakistan fail to qualify but Sri Lanka reach the last four — and are not drawn against India national cricket team — then Sri Lanka will play their semi-final in Colombo.

The ICC further clarified that if neither Pakistan nor Sri Lanka make the semi-finals, Semi-final 1 will be staged in Kolkata, while Semi-final 2 will be held in Mumbai.

India’s semi-final venue has also been pre-determined under specific scenarios. If India qualify, they will play in Mumbai regardless of opposition — unless they are drawn against Pakistan. In that case, the high-profile clash would be moved to Colombo. Should none of India, Pakistan or Sri Lanka qualify, the semi-final match-ups will follow the original bracket structure: the Group 1 winners facing the Group 2 runners-up in Kolkata, and the Group 2 winners meeting the Group 1 runners-up in Mumbai.

Notably, Sri Lanka and Pakistan are both part of Group 2 in the Super Eight stage, ruling out the possibility of a Sri Lanka-Pakistan semi-final.

The updated clarification marks a shift — or at least an expansion — of the ICC’s original schedule announcement in November. The earlier release had outlined contingency plans for Pakistan to play their semi-final and final in Sri Lanka but did not specify arrangements if Sri Lanka themselves progressed to the knockout stages.

Under the initial schedule, if Pakistan qualified for the semi-finals, Colombo would replace Kolkata as the host of Semi-final 1. Additionally, if Pakistan reached the final, the title clash would shift from Ahmedabad to Colombo. It also confirmed that an India-Pakistan semi-final would be staged in Colombo, while Mumbai would host India’s semi-final against any other opponent.

With the Super Eight stage now underway, the ICC’s updated communication provides greater clarity on venue allocations — and opens up the possibility of Sri Lanka enjoying home advantage in a crucial knockout fixture.
