Harmanpreet Kaur Injured, Smriti Mandhana Steps In as Captain

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur sustained a left knee injury during the first ODI against Australia at Allan Border Field, ruling her out of fielding duties as India defended a modest total of 214.

A media release from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Harmanpreet injured her left knee while batting and that the team’s medical staff is closely monitoring her condition. In her absence on the field, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana assumed leadership responsibilities.

The injury appeared to surface late in India’s innings. Harmanpreet received on-field medical attention at the end of the 38th over when she was batting on 40 off 67 deliveries. Despite discomfort, she continued and was eventually dismissed in the 44th over after scoring a gritty 53 off 84 balls. Her knock, which included three boundaries, played a crucial role in stabilizing the innings after India suffered a middle-order collapse.

At one stage, India had slumped to 140 for 6 in the 34th over, despite a fluent 58 off 68 balls from Mandhana at the top of the order. Harmanpreet then stitched together a vital 53-run partnership with Kashvee Gautam, who contributed 43 off 44 balls. Gautam was the last batter to be dismissed as India were bowled out for 214.

Australia’s bowling effort was bolstered by the inclusion of Megan Schutt, who was not part of the original ODI squad but delivered an impactful performance, returning figures of 2 for 42 from her nine overs to help restrict India.

The hosts are, however, dealing with injury concerns of their own. Key players Ellyse Perry and Kim Garth have been ruled out of the ODI series after sustaining quad injuries during the preceding T20I series, which Australia lost 2-1. Both are now racing against time to regain fitness ahead of the one-off Test scheduled after the ODI leg.

India will await further updates on Harmanpreet’s fitness as the series progresses, with her availability potentially pivotal to the team’s campaign.
