Amelia Kerr Stars with Maiden T20I Century as New Zealand women's national cricket team Thrash Zimbabwe women's national cricket team

New Zealand’s new full-time captain Amelia Kerr delivered a dream start to her tenure, smashing a scintillating maiden T20 International century to power her side to a commanding 92-run victory over Zimbabwe in the series opener in Hamilton.

Opting to bat first, the White Ferns piled up an imposing 202 for 1, driven by Kerr’s unbeaten 101 off just 51 deliveries and a fluent 66 not out from Izzy Gaze. The only blemish on New Zealand’s innings was the early dismissal of opener Georgia Plimmer, who made a brisk 33 off 20 balls before falling to Nyasha Gwanzura during the powerplay.

From there, Kerr and Gaze took complete control. The pair stitched together an unbroken 159-run partnership for the second wicket off just 89 balls, dismantling the Zimbabwe attack with precision and power. The stand set a new New Zealand record for the highest second-wicket partnership in women’s T20Is, surpassing the previous mark of 142 held by Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine.

Kerr’s innings was studded with 19 boundaries, and she brought up her century in dramatic fashion off the final ball of the innings, racing back for two against pace bowler Tendai Makusha. In doing so, she became only the third New Zealand woman to score a T20I hundred, joining Devine and Bates, while registering the quickest century among the trio.

Zimbabwe’s chase faltered from the outset. Openers Kelis Ndhlovu and Gwanzura were dismissed for ducks inside the first two overs, bowled by Bree Illing and Jess Kerr respectively.

Beloved Biza offered resistance with a patient unbeaten 49 off 55 balls and shared a 50-run partnership with captain Josephine Nkomo. However, the mounting required rate proved insurmountable as Zimbabwe closed on 110 for 4, well short of the target.

Kerr capped a memorable all-round performance by claiming 2 for 14 from her four overs, underlining her impact in all departments.

The match marked only the fourth T20I New Zealand have played without either Bates or Devine in the XI. Bates is sidelined with a quadriceps injury, while Devine was unavailable for the series.

The ongoing contest is also the first-ever international series between New Zealand and Zimbabwe. The three-match T20I series in Hamilton will be followed by a three-match ODI series in Dunedin.
