South Africa women vs Pakistan women ODI series: Dercksen Stars as Proteas Clinch Series in 706-Run Thriller

Annerie Dercksen delivered a scintillating all-round performance to steer South Africa women's national cricket team to a series-clinching victory over Pakistan women's national cricket team in a high-scoring One-Day International at Centurion on Wednesday.

In a contest that produced a staggering 706 combined runs, Dercksen smashed a 68-ball 90 and followed it up with figures of 3 for 59 to prove the difference between the sides.

South Africa Post Mammoth Total

After Pakistan opted to field, South Africa made an aggressive start. Tazmin Brits and captain Laura Wolvaardt added 55 inside nine overs to set the tone. Although Faye Tunnicliffe fell soon after and Brits departed for a commanding 77 off 62 balls, the momentum never shifted away from the hosts.

From the 17th over onward, South Africa took full control. Sune Luus and Dercksen stitched together a 102-run partnership off 100 balls for the fourth wicket. Later, Dercksen combined with Chloe Tryon to plunder 62 runs from just 31 deliveries.

Late fireworks came from Nadine de Klerk, who blasted 49 off 26 balls, including 45 runs added for the eighth wicket in only 19 balls. South Africa’s innings featured five significant individual contributions, with Dercksen’s 90 leading the charge, followed by Brits (77), Luus (57 off 67), Tryon (37 off 23), and de Klerk’s rapid cameo.

Amid the run-fest, Syeda Aroob Shah stood out with the ball for Pakistan, returning figures of 2 for 49 from her ten overs.

Pakistan’s Brave Chase Falls Short

Pakistan’s response was equally spirited. Dercksen struck early to remove Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin within the first six overs, but Sadaf Shamas and Ayesha Zafar revived the chase with a 97-run stand off 87 balls.

Shamas scored 61 off 62 balls before falling, while Zafar added a further 76-run partnership with Natalia Pervaiz. Zafar was eventually dismissed for 75 off 68 balls by Nondumiso Shangase, who struck again on the next ball to remove Aliya Riaz.

At 197 for 5 after 30 overs, Pakistan remained firmly in contention. However, the loss of key wickets at crucial intervals proved costly.

Captain Fatima Sana led a counterattack, adding 81 runs for the seventh wicket with Aroob. Sana’s brisk 52 off 36 balls briefly reignited hopes, but once she fell, Pakistan struggled to keep pace with the escalating required rate.

Aroob contributed 40 off 44 balls, while Diana Baig struck an unbeaten 38 off 25, but without a set top-order batter anchoring the chase, Pakistan ultimately fell short.

Series Secured

The victory handed South Africa an unassailable lead in the ODI series, adding to their earlier 2-1 triumph in the T20I leg. The third and final ODI is scheduled to be played in Durban on Sunday.

Dercksen’s commanding all-round display ensured that in a match dominated by batters, it was her contributions with both bat and ball that ultimately swung the contest decisively in South Africa’s favour.
