Sahibzada Farhan Breaks Virat Kohli’s Record for Most Runs in a T20 World Cup
Sahibzada Farhan etched his name into the record books after surpassing Virat Kohli to become the highest run-scorer in a single ICC Men’s T20 World Cup edition.
Coming into Pakistan’s final Super Eight clash against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, Farhan needed 38 runs to overtake Kohli’s tally of 319 runs, set during the 2014 tournament. The milestone was achieved in style as Farhan struck a boundary to move past the mark, further underlining his dominance in this year’s competition.
Farhan has been in scintillating form throughout the tournament, leading the run charts for much of the campaign. He has registered three half-centuries — against USA, England, and Sri Lanka — along with a brilliant century against Namibia. His aggressive approach has seen him score at a strike rate exceeding 158, significantly higher than Kohli’s 129.14 during his record-setting campaign in 2014, when the Indian star notched up four half-centuries.
In addition to his consistency, Farhan has been one of the most destructive batters in the competition. He currently ranks second among the tournament’s leading six-hitters with 16 maximums, just behind Shimron Hetmyer’s 17.
Pakistan’s qualification hopes, however, remain dependent on a commanding victory. To secure a place in the semi-finals, they must overturn New Zealand’s superior net run rate, requiring an approximately 65-run win over Sri Lanka. While the match is a dead rubber for Sri Lanka following their elimination after a loss to New Zealand earlier this week, Pakistan stayed alive in the race after England defeated New Zealand in Colombo.
Pakistan made a flying start in their must-win encounter, with Farhan and Fakhar Zaman stitching together a rapid century partnership after Sri Lanka opted to bowl first. Should Pakistan progress, they are slated to play their semi-final in Colombo against the table-toppers of the opposite group, currently led by South Africa.
With records tumbling and qualification on the line, Farhan’s historic knock has provided Pakistan with both momentum and belief at a crucial juncture of the tournament.
